The pulping stage separates the cellulose (which becomes fibre) from the lignin and hemicellulose (which get washed away or burned as boiler fuel). There are two industrial routes, and understanding them is the single most important thing to understand about bamboo fabric.

The viscose route (the market majority)

Roughly 90% of bamboo fibre worldwide is made through the viscose process. The chips are steeped in a strong sodium hydroxide bath (caustic soda, around 18% concentration) for two to three hours. That converts the cellulose to alkali cellulose — a swollen, reactive form that can be dissolved. The alkali cellulose is then aged, treated with carbon disulfide to form cellulose xanthate, and dissolved into a syrupy orange solution called viscose. The viscose is filtered, extruded through a spinneret (a metal disc with thousands of tiny holes), and the resulting filaments harden as they hit a sulphuric-acid coagulation bath. What comes off the line is regenerated cellulose fibre — chemically identical to rayon.

The lyocell (closed-loop) route

The newer, cleaner route dissolves the pulp in a non-toxic organic solvent called N-methylmorpholine-N-oxide (NMMO) instead of caustic soda plus carbon disulfide. The NMMO is recovered and reused at rates above 99% — nothing is dumped — and the resulting fibre goes to market under the “bamboo lyocell” name.
